Box Office Report – February 19-21, 2010

“Shutter Island” dominated this weekend, debuting with $41.1M. The movie was released in 2,991 theaters and provided best openings for both Scorsese & DiCaprio. Previous best for DiCaprio was $30.1M for “Catch Me If You Can” and Scorsese’s was “The Departed” for $26.9M. With a budget of $80M, the film should become very profitable. “Valentine’s Day” tumbled a disturbing 70.4% this weekend to $16.7 though still getting second place. The $52M production is already totaled $86.9M, and could be on track to a final gross of $125M.

“Avatar” rose to the number three spot this weekend, bringing in $16.2M, bringing its total to $688.0M. It should become the first movie to ever gross $700M by next week. “Avatar’s” worldwide gross hs grown to $2.47B. “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” fell 51.2% this weekend grossing $15.3M. With $58.7 in the bank so far, the $100M mark is still a possibility. “The Wolfman” crashed in its second week falling 68.6%, grossing $9.9M. With $50.4M in the bank so far, a total of $70M is possible, a far cry from its $150M budget.

“Dear John” grossed $7.1M, dropping 55.6%, bringing its total to $65.8M. “The Tooth Fairy” grossed $4.4M this weekend, bringing its total to $49.7M. A final gross of $60?65M is in the cards for The Rock starrer. “Crazy Heart” performed well this weekend, only dropping 30.5% and grossing $3.0M in only 1,089 theaters. Total gross for the award winner is $21.5M so far.

The next two action movies have both been performing poorly and have been fading fast. “From Paris With Love” grossed $2.7M, bringing its total gross to a mere $21.4M. “Edge of Darkness” grossed $2.2M, bringing its total to $40.3M. “From Paris With Love” should make about $30M total and “Edge of Darkness” should make about $50M total.

Next week, Kevin Smith’s “Cop Out” and the horror remake “The Crazies” are released.

    I feel so bad for Wolfman. I hope it can somehow make it’s money back. I wanted to see that movie do well.

    I agree Ralph, I really liked it!! and with $97,806,535 worldwide so far plus DVD/Blu-Ray it will make it back but just don’t expect a Wolfman 2 anytime soon!
