When I started out as a theater manager one of my first jobs was to receive a nightly phone call from each theater in the chain and write down the night’s grosses. Then, when I had gotten all of the pertinent information I would call a place called Entertainment Data, a business that talked to theaters all over the country to obtain box office grosses. My how times have changed.
Today Warner Brothers announced that “Sherlock Holmes” had crossed the $500 million mark globally. It also announced that the figure was hit at 7:12 p.m., Los Angeles time, on Monday, March 22. No word on who bought the fateful ticket and if they went for the healthy yogurt drops or a big tub of buttered popcorn at the concession stand.
