Fox’s successful series “Alvin and the Chipmunks” is already planning its second sequel and of course, will be in 3D.
The studio is planning ahead and already locked in a release date of Dec. 16, 2011 for the third film. Right now, “Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D” is the only film set to be released that day but with time that is sure to change. Steven Spielberg’s 3D family entry “Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of Unicorn.” is set to open a week later on Dec. 23.
The first film, released Dec. 14, 2007, grossed $217.3 million domestically and $144 million overseas for a total $361.3 million. The second film, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” opened Dec. 23, 2009, grossed $217.4 million domestically and $212.4 million overseas for a total $429.8 million.
