For those that do not know “Get Him to The Greek” is actually a spin-off from 2008′s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”. The film features the return of the character Aldous Snow (Russell Brand), the once drug addict music rock star. Jonah Hill also returns from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” but actually plays a completely different unrelated character, not sure why they didn’t tie it together. Either way the movie works and is honestly 10x better than “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”. For me watching “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” it felt at times long and draw out and although very funny it just didn’t connect with as many jokes as “Greek”, I kept waiting for more Aldous Snow. Well with this movie I got what I wanted, a whole lot of Snow.
The film starts with the breakdown of famous rock star Aldous Snow from tops of the charts to the discount rack, after his release of the racist, ‘African Child’ album. Sean Combs stars as Sergio Roma, head of Pinnacle Records, and sends Aaron Green (Hill) on a quest to get Snow from London to LA in 72 hours to play an anniversary show at the Greek. Sounds easy? Well things don’t prove as easy as they sound. Snow takes Aaron on the ride of his life and both of them travel and try and find themselves and of course practically bring down the house in the process.
Sean Combs completely steals the show as the psycho music producer who pushes both Snow and Green over the edge in order to get them to the show in time. Russell Brand, what can I say, there is something about him that you can take your eyes off the screen. Like I said when watching “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, I only wanted to see more Snow. Brand plays Snow so well and it just seems natural for his crazy appearance and behavior. Before seeing this film, I honestly wasn’t a Jonah Hill fan. I felt that after “Superbad” he continued to play the same bland character and his dry humor never really did it for me. In “Greek”, Hill definitely redeems himself and nails every joke he says and give quite a physical performance.
Keep an eye out for many many funny cameos from Tom Felton from “Harry Potter” series, “The Today Show”s Meredith Vieira, rapper Pharrell, Lars Ulrich from Metallica and Kristen Bell as Sarah Marshall also returns. In closing, the movie proved quite surprising and hysterical. Unlike when watching “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, I wished this film could have been longer. Sit back have a great time and get ready to laugh your ass off!
