William Shockley reflects on roles in “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman” and “Showgirls”

William Shockley (born September 17, 1963) is an actor and musician. Shockley was born in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in political science. Shockley has appeared in many movies and TV shows including Welcome to Paradise, In Justice, Showgirls, The Joyriders, and most notably Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman in which he played Hank Lawson. He also appeared in the 2007 film Treasure Raiders.

Mike Smith: You led a rather nomadic lifestyle as a young man. Did that experience help prepare you for the different roles you’ve played as an actor?
William Shockley: Moving around all the time during my childhood actually proved to be a huge plus. I can pretty much travel anywhere and feel comfortable with my surroundings. I was forced to learn how to acclimate and get along with strangers. I’m sure that living in different parts of America and living abroad in Europe gave me insight and perspectives that I have woven into various characters.

MS: You’ve done a lot of episodic television, most notably “Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman.” Is there a comfort as an actor when you’re adding to the same character each week as opposed to a one-shot film character?
WS: Being a series regular on a television show like “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” was a true gift. I loved the privilege of developing a character over a 6-year run. I became very attached to the role of “Hank Lawson”. He was a complex character… lots of layers, which is wonderful. He was one guy on the surface, and a totally different person in his heart. The great writing on “Dr. Quinn” was a huge bonus. I’ve done many films as well, and I seem to always want to do a sequel to a film when I have a character that I connect with and enjoy portraying. I feel this way about “Born Wild”, a film coming out this summer, where I co-star with Barry Corbin, Kix Brooks (of “Brooks & Dunn”), Tanya Clarke, Joe Lando and Justin Deeley. The role in “Born Wild” is “CJ Jennings”… a guy with a wayward, troubled past, who goes back home to reconcile his future. “CJ” has so many issues and so much baggage, yet at the end of the day, he finds redemption. I also got to reunite with Joe Lando, from “Dr. Quinn”, on this film. Joe is a dear friend and it was great to be back on a set with him.

MS: You’re upcoming film, “Reaper,” teams you up with “Starship Troopers'” Jake Busey. Did the two of you get to trade any Paul Verhoeven stories?
WS: I actually didn’t have any scenes with Jake. I worked with Danny Trejo and Vinnie Jones, both great actors and a lot of fun to be around.

MS: In the almost 20 years since it’s release, “Showgirls” has blossomed into a cult hit, with midnight showings ala “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Did you have any idea when you were making the film that it would still resonate all of these years later?
WS: I don’t ever have a preconceived idea of how a film will resonate with the audience. As an actor, all I can do is prepare to the best of my ability, show up on the set, and deliver the goods. The rest is up to the director and producers and other actors in the film. You can only control yourself in this type of setting, and then, anticipate the best.

MS: What do you have coming up next?
WS: I actually have several films coming out in 2014. “Ambush at Dark Canyon”, a western that Team Two Entertainment produced (my production company) starring Kix Brooks and Ernie Hudson, was released January 14 and is available on DVD at Walmart. This summer I’m in two films, “Born Wild” and “Dug Up”, a redneck-stoner-zombie-comedy. Later in the year “Reaper” will come out, followed by “Finding Harmony” with Billy Zane and Allison Eastwood, and a western, “Hot Bath ‘An A Stiff Drink”, with Ronnie Blevins and Grainger Hines. My partners in Team Two Entertainment are Kix Brooks, Dustin Rikert and Eric Brooks. We have a big announcement being made this Spring. There’s a really awesome deal being set up that I’m very excited about. Stay tuned for those details.

Interview with Christine Quinn

Christine Quinn is playing the role of Jess in “Shark Night 3D”.  Her role in the film is reminiscent of Susan Backlinie’s character in “Jaws”.  Christine is also in the upcoming film “Humans vs. Zombies” and is currently filming “The Ghost of Goodnight Lane” with Billy Zane, Danielle Harris and Lacey Chabert.  Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Christine about “Shark Night 3D” and her upcoming movies.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us about your character Jess in “Shark Night 3D”?
Christine Quinn: It is cool because I am in the opening scene of the movie.  They did it like “Jaws” style and everyone remembers the girl from the opening scene.  Basically my boyfriend and I go the lake for the weekend.  We decide it is a good idea to drink and swim around the lake.  He goes to make a sandwich and I get attacked by the shark.  So he comes out and finds me dead…[laughs] So yeah that’s the quick version.

MG: How does it feel to be the poster girl for the film and also a prominent sell for the trailer?
CQ: My family came to me also and said “Oh my God, you are on the poster”.  It is really cool thing.  I guess they kind of dubbed it all together.  I never thought from such a little part it would have so much publicity.  Everyone loves sharks and they have Shark Week last month so everyone is excited.

MG: How was it working in the water?
CQ: We filmed it in September last year and it was so cold, the water was freezing.  The stunt guys were wearing full-on wet suits.  I am in a bikini and I was freezing [laughs].  The technicalities of the stunts were so amazing.  You see movies and you see what goes in them but you wonder how they actually do that.  It was cool to get to see the behind the scenes of how they pull it all together.  For example, I was attached to a harness on my body.  I have like six stunt guys underwater at different times pulling me in different directions.  I had to be in super good shape because otherwise it would have been hard to pull off.  When we did the breakaway ladder shots, if the stunt guy pulled me down and I moved the wrong way I could hit my head.  All these little technicalities go into this movie.  The scene is only like three minutes long but it took three days to shoot.

MG: Tell us about working with David Ellis?
CQ: David is coolest director I have ever worked with.  He just let’s you do your thing.  He tells us to just feel the lines and do what we think is right.  He puts all of his trust in the actors.  He knows who he hired and he hired them for a reason.  So basically my co-star Damon Lipari and I, we have the only kiss in the entire movie.  It was totally improved because David said to do whatever we want.  He thought it was so perfect.  I have never had a director that praises the actors so often.  It makes you feel so good and makes you just want to work with him and I hope I can work with him again.

MG: From sharks to zombies, tell us about the film “Humans vs. Zombies”?
CQ: That was a super fun shoot to do.  I am in the trailer but you would not recognize me because I look so scary.  I was so zombied out [laughs].  I love horror films and having an opportunity to work on them.  I could have not been any more thrilled.  The cool thing about that movie is that my boyfriend and I AGAIN [laughs] are at the lake and we are playing around.  This guy comes up to us and he is all zombied out and ends up bitting me.  I am on the one that brings the virus back to the city.  It was fun movie.  All the special effects in the film are so cool.

MG: I love you in the GameStop commercial for the “Mortal Kombat”, was that fun to shoot?
CQ: [laughs] Yeah that was so much fun.  I went to the audition and I didn’t know my lines at all.  The director asked me if I knew the lines and I said “No”, so he told me just to improv.  I don’t know much about games but I just did a bunch of improv and he loved it.  So he then booked me the role.  During the shoot, rvery take that we did he was like “No, no, no you are too smart for me…I need you to be dumber” [laughs].  We finally got it and it turned out really funny.

MG: What else do you have planned next?
CQ: I am in Dallas right now and  I am working on a movie with Billy Zane, Danielle Harris and Lacey Chabert called “The Ghost of Goodnight Lane”.  I am really about this film since I am the lead in next to Billy Zane.  It is going to be really amazing.  I want to continue in the horror film genre, since it has been really good to me. Also the same month that “Shark Night” comes out, I am going to be in Playboy, not naked or anything.  Playboy found out about “Shark Night” and they asked me to be in their article called “Up and Coming”.  It features athlete and movie stars etc.  So that is really exciting also.  So I will be purchasing my first Playboy next month [laughs].

Interview with Molly C. Quinn

Molly C. Quinn is know for her role of Alexis on ABC’s “Castle”. With Season four around the corner, Media Mikes had a chance to chat with Molly about working on the show as well as her numerous other upcoming projects.

Mike Gencarelli: Tell us about how your character Alexis in “Castle” has changed since season one?
Molly C. Quinn: The great thing about the Alexis character is that she is growing and changing each season just as I am. In the first season Alexis and her dad have all these systems such as the one that they use when he ends up in jail and Alexis has to bail him out. When Alexis’s grandmother comes into the picture Alexi’s starts to see things differently and her and her Grandmother start to work together to help her father. There also starts to be more pressures from school and boyfriends start to become an option. Alexis is also seeing that her dad’s infatuation with the police and Beckett are beginning to become more dangerous than helpful. Even I don’t know how she is going to respond to all these things in season 4. I think it’s going to be extremely interesting to watch Alexis grow from this vantage point.

MG: Can you tell us what it’s like working with Nathan Fillion and Susan Sullivan?
MQ: Working with both Nathan and Susan is a real pleasure and we all get along really well. It’s great that we can all help each other bring more satisfaction to our acting! Susan is such a professional. Nathan is the same way but he also likes to bring the fun! I just try and keep up.

MG: One thing I love is the family relationship that is displayed between you all and how your discussions always leads to clues for the cases, what do you like most about playing Alexis?
MQ: I’m going to cut to the chase and tell you that Alexis knows exactly what’s going on but is letting her dad piece things together by giving him just enough information to find out the answer on his own.(Laughs) I like Alexis because she’s a real teen. As an actor its fun playing a versatile person that is capable of doing so many different things. I also like that the writers have had the courage to keep Alexis true and good! As we know there are a lot of girls like that in the world and they are often very under represented on screen. I feel very fortunate to be the person to represent these girls.

MG: In second to last episode of “Castle” this season, we find out that your character is planning on going to school outside of New York, what can you tell us about that?
MQ: Alexis is thinking about following her boyfriend to college but, I don’t really know what will happen now especially after what unfolded last season with the murders. Me personally I don’t really see her going anywhere.

MG: Tell us about your role in Nickelodeon’s “Winx Club” playing Bloom?
MQ: “Winx Club” rocks! I love being on there and kicking trolls butts.(laughs) Bloom is a girl that finds out she is a fairy and goes away to a special school to develop her fairy skills. While there she meets a friend and together they decide to start a club dedicated to fighting evil. The show really promotes teamwork.

MG: You also have done quite a bit of voice over work. Can you tell us about that?
MQ: I did an audio book titled “City of Fallen Angels”. Being a huge fan of that series I had read all the books and developed voices in my head for each character prior to the project. Getting to use all those voices was a dream come true! I think I cried at the end of it because I was just so happy. “The 3rd Birthday” was a video game I did that was just awesome. We converted the game from Japanese to English using some really sophisticated equipment. The hardest part was getting the dialogue to match up with the characters mouth movements. The animation is beautiful and the story line is super intense. I can’t wait for it to come out. For “A Christmas Carol” a lot of people think that was animation and we did the sound in a booth but, it really was motion capture. Motion Capture is very different and extreme. You wear a special suit and that’s really it. There is no makeup or props and the performance really has to come from each actor’s imagination. I really treasure getting to work with Robert Zemeckis, Jim Carrey and Gary Oldman on that project.

MG: What can you tell us about your role in “Finding Hope”?
MQ: “Finding Hope” is an ongoing project that started out of a short called “The Sacrifice” when I was 13. It really is to bring awareness to teen homelessness and runaways. We have been able to do a longer sequel to the short where my character has made it out of her bad family situation only to find herself in a worse situation. Hopefully this Christmas we will be able to turn the story into a full length feature. This project has really woken me up to the real world.
